Overview

Peter Gabriel is the founder and managing director of Gabriel Law Corporation. He has 40 years of experience under his belt. The work undertaken stretches over numerous complex international and national arbitration disputes, international and national litigation and transactional documentation work.

Educational and Professional Qualifications

Peter Gabriel obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree from the National University of Singapore. In the first year, he was the top student in the Law Faculty of the National University of Singapore. Thereafter, he graduated among the top few students in the Law Faculty of the National University of Singapore.

After obtaining his Bachelor of Laws degree, Peter Gabriel was awarded a scholarship by the Australian National University, Canberra, to pursue a full time Master of Laws degree by way of a full written thesis on International Finance Law. Peter Gabriel was awarded the Master of Laws degree by the Australian National University on the basis of the said written thesis. Also, whilst writing the thesis, Peter Gabriel was also appointed as a tutor in Australian Commercial Law at the Law Faculty of the Australian National University.

Thereafter, Peter Gabriel returned to Singapore to practise law with a local firm working with Baker & McKenzie.

In 1986, Peter Gabriel set up the firm of Gabriel Peter & Partners which subsequently was transformed into the present Gabriel Law Corporation. In the same year, Peter Gabriel published an international finance book in England under the title “Legal Aspects of Syndicated Loans” under English law. This was one of the few books at Peter Gabriel carried on his practice in international commercial matters as well as constantly engaging in academic work. He wrote an original chapter entitled “Loan Syndication” in the Halsbury’s Laws of England Singapore Edition. Peter Gabriel also contributed an article relating to the evidence law of Singapore entitled, “Burden of Proof and Standard of Proof in Civil Litigation” to the Singapore Academy of Law Journal (2013) 25 SAcLJ 130. He also co-authored with Reuben Gavin Peter a chapter for the book “Civil Litigation in Singapore” (2016) Sweet & Maxwell, Chapter 6, entitled “Evidence”. 

Peter Gabriel was admitted to the Singapore Bar as an Advocate & Solicitor in 1982. He is also admitted as a olicitor in England & Wales. He is also a panel member of Arbitrators in the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, APRAG’s Panel of International Arbitrators, Asian International Arbitration Centre and the Indian Council of Arbitration. He is also a Fellow of the English Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators.

Over the last 30 years, Peter Gabriel has done a variety of international arbitrations both as counsel as well as an arbitrator

(a) Commodity Trade and Finance

Peter Gabriel has represented international traders in such arbitration disputes as well as financial institutions. Arbitrations are confidential and as such, details may not be provided. However, certain arbitration disputes were later highlighted in court litigation. These include: H & CS Holdings Pte Limited v RBRG Trading (UK) Limited [2015] EWHC 1665 (Comm).

(b) Disputes in International Joint Venture Agreements and Related Transactions

Examples of recent arbitrations include obtaining an award securing declarations, resulting in roughly a quarter of a billion Singapore Dollars in damages. Last year, a complex award was obtained for representing a party in an investment dispute for a sum of roughly a quarter of a billion Singapore Dollars

 

International Dispute Resolution

Peter Gabriel has represented clients internationally in various jurisdictions, working closely with international counsel. Cases include commercial enforcement actions for banks as well as international corporate clients. Countries in such actions include Switzerland, Japan, Indonesia, India, Thailand, Australia and England.

Current Practice

Peter Gabriel is currently focused on various international arbitration disputes. He has expanded his arbitration practice to include work from Thailand, Malaysia, Cayman Islands and Indonesia
